Our Laner of the Week, Lindsey Jo says, “I’m an artist-writer-dancer-teacher and I love making mixed media video essays and experimental animations, performing dance and poetry, or taking photos of beautiful shadows. I write a regular Substack series called OOH LA LA! It’s a collective practice in paying attention, which includes my own writing on noticing beauty, as well as ongoing prompts and community submissions. There’s a ton coming up for this project that I’m really excited about! I’m also preparing to teach ADHD Artist’s Way, a 12-week creativity workshop for non-linear thinkers that I designed with flexibility and compassionate adaptation at the center.” Wow! Lot’s of cool stuff happening there…further deep dive into Lindsey Jo..below!
What do you like about Mustard Lane or just working events in general?
I love working events because I enjoy contributing positive energy to in-person experiences. My background sits at the intersection of experiential storytelling and performance, creative production, and strategic execution, so I understand both the big picture aspects of a successful event as well as the value of having positive people on site. I especially love working with Mustard Lane for this exact reason – the team is always exceptionally positive and kind-hearted people full of good energy!
When you’re not on the Lane…what are you doing?!
When I’m not on the Lane, I’m either writing, hosting an event or class, working on a project late into the night, hugging my cat, reading on the train (somehow I’m always on the train!), or walking around the city daydreaming.
You’re eating out with friends/fam…what do you order for the table? Any thought behind this?
For the table, I will definitely order either chips and guac or edamame, since these are two of my faves, and both are easily shareable. Also, I am vegan and gluten free, so my options are generally limited, which honestly makes for an exciting dining experience wherever I go. Creativity thrives with constraints!
Are you looking forward to anything for the rest of 2026?
I’m especially looking forward to my birthday in early November. I celebrate birthday-month, which mostly means I bring extra intention to do what I love for the entire month. So far, this year’s itinerary includes a witchy ritual, a dance class, pan-fried noodles from my favorite restaurant in Chinatown, a sunrise coffee gathering with friends, a storytelling event, a jazz club, and a cozy film at a cozy theater. I’m also thinking I’ll visit an apple orchard or do a meditative float tank session, though there’s still time to sort it all and I like to leave room for spontaneity.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you choose, and why?!
I want to go everywhere, but I’d especially love to visit Kyiv, Ukraine one day because it’s where my darling partner was born and raised. The city is currently an active war zone (now in its 4th year since the country was invaded!) so it’s impossible to visit, but I really hope peace will come so soon and the city can rebuild. I’ve heard it’s a dreamy place!
What’s your favorite way to spend a day off?
I love to wander around the city like a tourist, find my way to a museum or vintage store, or just browse books at the library. I also LOVE to take a ferry ride and am perfectly content to slow sip an oatmilk latte in the sun if she’s shining, or curled up in a cafe with my journal.
What’s an essential part of your daily Laner routine?
Daily, I feel best if I drink water before coffee. I gotta gentle-parent myself into doing it most days, but it is essential.
Fall is upon us! What’s something you look forward to this time of year?
My birthday month, as previously detailed! I was born two days after Halloween, on Day of the Dead (so I’m definitely a witch!), and fall/spooky season feels like one giant celebration of life for me. It’s my new year!
Favorite scary movie?!
I don’t like scary movies! Give me a rom-com, a campy comedy, or a beautiful cinematic story, but never a scary movie!
Did you dress up for Halloween?!
Yes! I went as the The Moon, Noel Fielding’s recurring character from the British comedy series, The Mighty Boosh.
Pumpkin or Apple pie…?
Apple, for sure.
If you could have your dream job tomorrow – other than Laner of the Week – what would it be?
I would love to be a touring artist, taking my interactive music-poetry-storytelling-comedy-zen-love-dance show around the world to heaps of sold out crowds, supported by a crew of all my best friends.
What has freelancing and working events taught you?
Freelancing and working events has strengthened my ability and improv muscles, because it’s all sort of unpredictable, but there’s a rhythm to it too, like the ocean, and by going with the flow of it, it’s more fun and enjoyable.
What’s a brand or event that you would love to represent or work as a Laner should the chance ever arise?
I would love to represent more nonprofit and philanthropic organizations like Templeton Foundation or National Geographic or mental health brands like Headspace or Calm.
Any advice for someone wanting to enter the world of freelance events/gigs?
My best advice is to be positive and professional, and to stay light in heart and mind. There’s a lot of stress behind the scenes in events and gig work, but if you can keep a lightness in your heart and mind, it makes the whole experience better for everyone, especially you! Like so much of the world, connecting with people is a great way to book more gigs, and if you’ve got good energy and are dependable and communicative, you’ll get more work.
Who inspires you most?
I’m inspired most by past and future me, and am always working with devotion to honor the dreams I’ve had since childhood with the joy and abundance that my future self is calling me toward. I’ve got big visions and I’m inspired to see it through!
