Our LANER OF THE WEEK is Alejandro Sobrino!

Matthew Borchers

Our Laner of the Week is Alejandro! Sometimes, it’s best to hear it straight from the source… :

“I was born in Puerto Rico but have lived in South Florida since I was 6. I grew up an only child with Latino parents, so I was always speaking Spanish with them, but learned to love reading at an early age. To give a short summary of my life for the past 10 years or so…I graduated with a Bachelors in Philosophy in 2019 and throughout college would work events occasionally. I wanted to be a writer but life had other plans…I started my business, East Domes, in 2021 selling geodesic domes for glamping and also helped to develop a glamping resort in the mountains of DR. These experiences taught me a lot. Now I still sell domes part time but late last year got back into working events, starting with Art Basel. I have grown to love the new direction that my life has taken me in terms of my career because it feels like a path that is truly my own! I plan on going back to school to slowly earn my masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in Fall 2027 but until then…I’m enjoying exploring where working events and selling my domes keeps taking me 🙂 ”

Wow! And that’s just the tip of the Alejandro iceberg!

What do you like about Mustard Lane or just working events in general?

What I love about events in general is that I get to go to places and meet people that I otherwise just would not have access to. Some life-changing relationships and opportunities have been formed for me through the connections I have made working events, and Mustard Lane just so happens to have some of the most exclusive and best events for this. I’m continuously getting inspired by the whole event set-up as a whole. Basically, I’m always getting ideas about how to be helpful and useful wherever I am put and also apply what I have learned to my own pursuits.

When you’re not on the Lane…what are you doing?!

Probably reading about some obscure esoteric topic haha

You’re eating out with friends/fam…what’s something you order for the table?

Definitely some waters…most people are dehydrated. In all seriousness, I’m unfortunately not much of a foodie so it would really depend on where I’m at.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go, and why?!

Japan! I’ve always been really into the work and depictions of the life of Miyamoto Musashi so I would love to take a pilgrimage to the cave where he spent the last years of his life.

What’s your favorite way to spend a day off from the Lane?

Starting my day with a workout and spending as much of it in nature as possible!

Ok, Fall/Spooky Season is here! What’s something you look forward to this time of year?

The weather! Florida is always so hot most of the year so now I can go outside without immediately sweating.

Are you dressing up for Halloween? …do tell…

I’m in between Cliff Booth from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood or Milo from Atlantis…

Pumpkin Pie or Apple Pie?!

Why not both?

Favorite scary movie?

Not a movie but the mini series Midnight Mass by Mike Flanagan is for sure one of my absolute favorites in any genre.

If you could have your dream job tomorrow, what would it be?

I would love to be a Counselor and help people through their most difficult moments.

What’s an essential part of your daily Laner routine?

Exercise and Prayer.

What’s something you’ve learned from freelancing and working events?

That you need to be open, adaptable, and flexible – both on the job and in life. Everybody is working these events to make a living and it often coexists with their other pursuits. Even if you know long term that you don’t want to be working events or freelancing forever, if you arrive with the best possible attitude you can have, then you are almost guaranteed to encounter situations and people that are an important part of your path.

What’s a brand or event that you would love to represent or work should the chance ever arise?

I am always happiest whenever I am representing anything health and wellness related. I would love to work with companies that are making things like saunas, hot tubs, cold plunges, gym equipment, and even the more far out stuff like float tanks and vibroacoustic beds. Dr. Bronners!

Who inspires you most?

Probably Rodney Mullen haha.

Any advice for someone looking to get started with events or as a Laner?

Be patient. At first gigs will be harder to come by but don’t stop applying. Be a member of any group that is titled “Brand Ambassadors of (your city)” and set post notifications for it. When people post jobs for you to apply to, make sure your resume is well done and that you always have updated professional pics/headshots.
