Our Laner of the Week, Baruch Porras-Hernandez, is a writer, performer, and standup comedian! He also loves working Mustard Lane events. You can find Baruch selling books for the well-known San Francisco Bookstore, City Lights Books, in the heart of the North Beach neighborhood. He’s also a special events host for literary shows with KQED; their next show is in October, and will be part of the LitQuake San Francisco Literary Festival. Join them Oct 24th, 8pm at The Latin American Club, for “Glitter Rage, Poems for Resistance.” Also in October, Baruch will be performing his new solo show that won BEST SOLO Comedy at the NYC Fringe Festival, titled, “Terrifying Immigrant Takes the Form of a Soft Chubby Bear.” Oct 16th-18th at Theatre Rhinoceros! So, basically, the spark notes are: Baruch has his hands in a LOT of things all at once! We love our multi-hyphenates. Even more on Baruch below…!
What do you like about Mustard Lane or just working events in general?
I like working Mustard Lane events because they hire well-rounded, friendly people, so all of my shifts have been with hardworking, interesting and fun folks, that I’ve enjoyed getting to know.
When you’re not on the Lane…what are you up to?!
Watching XMen 97 on Disney Plus..I’m a huge XMen Fan – since I was 12!
Favorite restaurant or food?
I love San Tung in San Francisco!
What’s a goal of yours for the remainder of 2026?
Reading more! …the last book I just finished last week is called, “Martyr!” and I highly enjoyed it.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go, and why?!
Toluca, Mexico to visit my family and hit the new gay bars that didn’t exist when I lived there.
What’s your favorite way to spend a day off from the Lane?
I love going on long bike rides through Golden Gate Park, and then hanging out with my friends at night at the Lonestar.
Summer is coming to a close…did you have any fun trips?
I spent a lot of time traveling to Sacramento, to visit my brother’s children, they are the cutest.
And would we find you by the pool or at the beach?
BOTH! Go to the beach during the day, then hit the pool at night to relax.
Popsicle or Ice Cream?
Ice cream with a popsicle dipped in it..”porque no los dos!” Why not both?! Life is short!
If you could have your dream job tomorrow, what would it be?
Full-time trust fund baby.
What’s an essential part of your daily routine?
Making my coffee, calling my dad in the mornings, calling my mom at night.
Advice for anyone getting started as a Laner?
Always check your emails!
What has freelancing / working events taught you?
I enjoy being flexible; I’ve learned to think on my feet, and think outside the box to get things done and have a good event.
What’s a brand or event that you would love to represent or work for as a Laner, should the chance ever arise?
Comedy festivals, or art festivals, or any brand with some free snack or candy samples is nice. I like candy. Flossing is over rated! Just kidding it is important to floss. I am Floss Queen!
What inspires you most?
My parents, and my brother who has worked so hard to have a family.
