Our LANER OF THE WEEK is Chris Stevens!

Matthew Borchers

Our Laner of the Week is Chris Stevens! He’s originally from Philadelphia, but raised in Gloucester Township, NJ. And get this: he’s a professional actor who has toured the country five times with the Broadway musicals: CATS, Mamma Mia!, Jersey Boys, Waitress, and TINA: The Tina Turner Musical. In 2024, you might’ve seen him make his primetime television debut on NBC’s Law & Order! You can also find him working out, playing tennis and pickle ball, spending time with family and friends, relaxing at the beach, and of course: seeing Broadway shows, movies, or live concerts. This month, he also officially became an Uncle for the first time! There’s lots to know about Chris, so keep reading!

What do you like about Mustard Lane or just working events in general?

I am brand spanking new to Mustard Lane! My first event was Bloomberg Day at the Bronx Zoo and though it got disgustingly hot, I had a blast. I was fortunate enough to work with the best team over at Beat The Box. I am an energetic people person who likes to have fun no matter what I am doing.

When you’re not on the Lane…what are you doing?!

I am performing onstage somewhere or I am working at a bar in Astoria called Trestle.

Favorite restaurant or food?

I love Italian. One of my many favorite spots in Manhattan is actually right on restaurant row in Hell’s Kitchen. It’s called Becco. Great service, friendly staff, wonderful portion sizes, and they always have delicious specials.

What is one of your goals for 2025?

Reminding myself that I am worthy of all the things I desire for my future. With hard work and a positive attitude, everything can happen. I would also like to travel to Alaska this year and write my third cabaret show to be produced in NY and Philly.

Favorite place to travel to? Any fun stories here?!

In 2018, my best friend, her now husband, and I took a vacation to Maui. It was the absolute best trip I have ever taken. We planned one activity every day and then would just wander the island and let the rest of the day unfold. It was perfect. We also all got tattoos on our final day. It is a trip I truly will never forget.

What’s your favorite way to spend a day off?

Sleep in. Get up, head to the gym and get a solid 90 minute work out in. Stop at my favorite bagel shop on the way home (Toast and Roast in Astoria) get a Bacon, Egg and Cheese with ketchup on a toasted Everything Bagel. Go for a long walk or bike ride. Shower and go meet friends for a happy hour before catching the sunset in Astoria Park or seeing a Broadway Show. After the show, I would wind down with a night cap at my favorite wine bar in midtown called Van Guard to see my favorite bartender, Cynthia.

Any recent concert-going / show experiences?!

I just recently went to go see Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter Tour in NJ by myself, with no ticket! I turned a look, headed over to Jersey, got a ticket at the door, was in the first row of the 200 section and had the time of my life and even met a couple new friends. Hands down top five nights I have had since moving to NYC in 2012!

What’s your non-Laner hidden talent?!

Sleeping. I am really good at it.

If you could have your dream job tomorrow, what would it be?

I would be starring in a Broadway show and working on a TV show at the same time.

What’s an essential part of your daily routine?

Working out, practicing gratitude, and telling the people in my life that I love them.

What life lesson did you learn the hard way?

When you know in your gut something is wrong, trust it. I have had two terrible break-ups in my life and I went against my gut to fight for the person. Both times it came back to bite me in butt — big time. TRUST YOUR GUT ALWAYS.

It’s summer! What have you been up to other than the Lane?!

I was performing in Frozen at the Muny in St. Louis in July! And then I headed up to North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly, MA, where I’m doing Grease through August. I am hoping to get down to the Jersey Shore with family after that and I am so looking forward to meeting my new niece! I hope to do some traveling in September.

Are you a beach or pool guy?

Beach. I love a pool to relax in, but there is nothing like feeling the sea breeze and hearing the ocean waves crash on the shore.

What’s a brand or event that you would love to represent or work as a Laner should the chance ever arise?

Anything LGBTQ related. As a member of the community, I believe in strong alliances and showing up for those who need support, no matter where they are in life. I also would love to work any event for any organization that Beyonce, Celine Dion, or Dolly Parton are involved with…strong women who have powerful voices and the ability to truly make a difference in our world.

Any advice for someone looking to get started in freelance/gig work?

Surround yourself with people you enjoy being around and if you know you’re good at something, advocate to do that thing. A positive attitude makes the day go by a lot faster. Also – laugh at yourself whenever you can! Trust me, just do it.

How do you stay inspired?

I am a dreamer; I get one one life. It’s important to do the things that bring me joy, fight for the things I want, and work hard for the things I want to achieve. At the end of the day, the only person I have to go to bed with is myself. If I am not living a fulfilling life, I have no one to blame but myself.
